FARM-TO-RETAIL PRICE LINKAGES FOR SUGAR

Abstract:
Effects of changes in the farm-level price of sugar on the retail price of various products were examined. A polynomial distributed lag was used to determine if retail prices responded asymmetrically to changes in the farm-level price of sugar, and the length of time required for the price adjustment to occur. Results indicate that retail prices of the five products under consideration do not respond asymmetrically to changes in farm-level prices. Changes in raw sugar price were found to be statistically insignificant for three products. The relationship between changes in retail prices and raw sugar prices was found to be statistically significant for refined sugar and cola-type soft drinks.
