FARM OPERATING AND FINANCIAL CHARACTERISTICS, JANUARY 1985

Mitchell J. Morehart and Richard Prescott

No 277891, Staff Reports from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: The average U.S. farm at the beginning of 1985 was owned by an individual who operated 728 acres, had total 1984 expenses of about $83,000, had assets of $323,000, had $7,000 in capital investments in 1984, had a gross income of $70,800, and had debts equal to 22 percent of total assets. These data come from the 1984 Farm Costs and Returns Survey (FCRS), conducted in January 1985. Using the FCRS data, the authors cross-tabulated farm production expenses; farm numbers and acreage; value of land, farm stocks, and inventories; sales and purchases of farm land; capital investment; and financial indicators by sales class, region, farm type, organizational structure, occupational specialty, and acres operated.
