Discussion: Rural Development Issues for Agricultural Economists in the Year 2000

Abstract: Rural America, over time, will become less distinct with respect to policies and institutions, and increasingly operate by the same set of rules and constraints that apply to the larger, urban-dominated, society. At what point will many rural institutions (such the Farm Credit Services, and the government-subsidized electricity and telephone services) cease to exist as separate institutions serving the unique needs of rural residents? Rural America will increasingly need to deal with environmental constraints comparable to what now exists in urban areas. Rural America must not become simply a convenient place for urban dwellers to store their solid waste!
