Abstract: In this paper I first review the sources that have accounted for growth of agricultural production in the past. I then examine the more recent evidence on the contribution of research to growth in agricultural production. Finally, I present some of my own perspectives on issues related to the support for agricultural research and the focus of agricultural research effort over the next several decades.
