Abstract:
The Sustainable Agriculture Production Programme (SAPP), implemented in Malawi from 2012 to 2021, aimed to reduce poverty and improve food security by promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and climate-resilient farming among smallholder households. Targeting 200,000 rural households across six districts, the programme supported production of maize, groundnuts, pigeon peas, cowpeas, soybeans, beans and sorghum. An impact assessment based on 1,590 households found that SAPP increased crop productivity, nutrition and income from crop production, particularly for maize, soybeans, pigeon peas and beans. The programme successfully encouraged adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and strengthened farmers’ productive capacity. However, it showed limited impact on total household income and commercialization, highlighting the need for stronger market linkages, collective action and resilience support.
