Abstract: The Rural Microfinance Program (PMR), implemented in Mali with IFAD support, aimed to improve the livelihoods of rural poor households, particularly women and youth, by expanding access to credit and promoting entrepreneurship through group-based microfinance and business training. Using non-experimental impact evaluation methods, the study found that PMR significantly increased access to credit, self-employment and women’s empowerment. Beneficiary households were more likely to engage in agro-processing and agro-trading activities and earned higher incomes from these enterprises, contributing to greater income diversification. However, these gains were accompanied by declines in agricultural production and sales, suggesting a shift away from farming. The program had limited effects on total income, dietary diversity and resilience, while food security and asset accumulation worsened.
