Abstract: The Poverty Reduction Project in Aftout South and Karakoro – Phase II (PASK II), implemented in Mauritania between 2012 and 2019 with support from IFAD, GEF and the Government of Mauritania, aimed to improve rural livelihoods, increase incomes, and strengthen sustainable natural resource management. Based on data from 2,243 households, the impact assessment found that the project improved access to water, increased vegetation cover, and strengthened resilience to climate and non-climate shocks. Participants were more likely to engage in self-employment and non-agricultural wage work, while livestock production rose significantly. The project also enhanced women’s participation in productive activities and livestock ownership. However, impacts on agricultural productivity, food security, literacy and market participation were limited, reflecting persistent structural and environmental challenges.
