Abstract:
The Productive Partnership in Agriculture Project (PPAP), implemented in Papua New Guinea from 2012 to 2021, aimed to improve the livelihoods of coffee and cocoa farmers by strengthening value chains, productive partnerships and market access infrastructure. An impact assessment based on data from 3,500 households found strong positive results in the cocoa sector, including higher yields, harvests, economic mobility, resilience, nutrition and gender-related outcomes. These gains were largely driven by the adoption of improved cocoa clones and farm rehabilitation. Impacts in the coffee sector were more limited, mainly improving productive assets, nutrition and perceptions of coffee quality, without significant gains in production or market access. The study highlights the importance of infrastructure, stronger market linkages, effective partnerships and resilience-building measures for sustainable agricultural development.
