Abstract:
The Livestock and Pasture Development Project II (LPDP II), implemented in Tajikistan’s Khatlon region from 2016 to 2021, aimed to improve livestock productivity, food security and sustainable pasture management among rural households. An impact assessment based on 1,500 households found that the project increased livestock income, cattle productivity, annual milk production, and adoption of improved livestock and pasture management practices. Project participants were more likely to use vaccinations, protected grazing areas, rotational grazing plans and pasture restoration measures. The project successfully increased livestock production while reducing environmental pressure through better pasture management. However, impacts on total household income, market access, resilience, food security, and dietary diversity were limited. Women-headed households benefited economically, and stronger pasture user institutions helped enhance local participation and social capital.
