Abstract:
In Southern Tunisia, harsh climate conditions and unsustainable use of land and water have limited agricultural and livestock productivity, contributing to persistent poverty. The PRODESUD I and II projects sought to improve livelihoods through rangeland management, irrigation, and soil and water conservation measures. IFAD’s impact assessment, focusing on the agro-pastoral development component, used quasi-experimental methods to measure project outcomes. Results showed significant improvements in income from livestock, productive capacity, market access, food security and poverty reduction, driven by higher animal productivity, improved olive yields and better access to inputs. Key lessons include the need to strengthen overall household income sources, improve market integration, address gender inequalities, support sustainable pasture management and ensure long-term functioning of local resource management groups.
