Abstract:
The Smallholder Productivity Promotion Programme (S3P), implemented in Zambia from 2013 to 2019, aimed to improve incomes, food security and nutrition among small-scale farmers by increasing production, productivity and sales of cassava, groundnuts and mixed beans. An impact assessment based on data from 2,052 households found that the programme increased cropping income, asset ownership, housing quality and the value of crop production, particularly for cassava and maize. Project participants were more likely to adopt improved planting materials, crop rotation, and residue management practices, and showed stronger market participation through higher crop sales and revenues. The programme also enhanced resilience through greater crop diversification, improved food and nutrition security, and modest gains in women’s joint decision-making and asset ownership.
