IFAD Impact Assessment - Nepal (Federal Democratic Republic of) Adaptation for Smallholders in Hilly Areas Project (ASHA)

Marup Hossain and Tisorn Songsermsawas

No 413189, IFAD Impact Assessment Series from International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

Abstract: The Adaptation for Smallholders in Hilly Areas Project (ASHA) was designed to enhance climate resilience among vulnerable smallholder farmers through a combination of grants, training, and capacity-building initiatives. Central to its approach was the strengthening of local climate adaptation planning via Local Adaptation Plans of Action (LAPAs) and the promotion of climate-smart agriculture through farmer field schools. The project also supported the development of climate-resilient communal infrastructure and encouraged climate-adaptive, income-generating activities, such as vegetable cultivation, agroforestry and livestock management, leveraging both financial and in-kind contributions from participating communities. This impact assessment of ASHA was conducted in 2023 using a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative household and community-level surveys with qualitative interviews.
