Red River Valley Potato Growers: Profile and Economic Concerns

Frank W. Hussey

No 358808, Service Reports (SR) from United States Department of Agriculture, Rural Development

Abstract: Excerpts from the Preface: The survey was developed to collect an adequate cross section of the valley's industry in 1972. These data are used to determine possible relationships and any trends of factors related to the problems. The survey also was designed to obtain perspectives of the potato growers. A 10-percent sampling of potato growers provided 119 responses. Data included age, acreage, education, gross farm sales, concerns, solutions, marketing channels, and uses of products. There were other concerns akin to the economic situation. As borne out subsequently in the FCS study, growers were uneasy about overproduction, their rules of traditional independence, and dominance in the potato industry by dealers and processors.
