Rural Electrification After the War

Abstract: Excerpts from the Report: This publication tells what progress has been made in rural electrification so far, what the post-war objectives should be, why an accelerated post-war program is desirable and important, what it should be possible to accomplish in 5 years. Some of the statistics and estimates relate to a 5-year program which could be accomplished with both private and Government financing; some relate only to a proposed 3-year REA program. In reading and using this publication, care should be taken to distinguish between these two sets of estimates. It shows that little more than 40 percent of our farms are electrified and that 3,540,000 farms and about 2,800,000 other rural dwellings are still without central-station electric service. It sets as post-war objectives (1) electric service to all rural people, (2) full use of electricity on the farmstead, (3) its full use for rural welfare, and (4) its use in developing local rural industries.
