Abstract: Report Preface: A survey to identify as many farmland protection programs as possible was conducted prior to writing THE PROTECTION OF FARMLAND: A REFERENCE GUIDEBOOK FOR STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS. A group of significant programs chosen for more intensive study is presented in this volume. Each study involved careful analysis of relevant documents and a one- or two-week visit to the jurisdiction. In some instances, even longer time was spent in the field. Interviews were conducted with farmers, government personnel, civic leaders, businessmen, real estate agents, bankers, and others involved in or affected by the programs. The unstinting cooperation of those interviewed made these studies possible. Many not only gave generously of their time in interviews, but also reviewed drafts of the studies. The case study programs were chosen so that the major techniques discussed in the GUIDEBOOK would be represented. Many of the case studies deal with agricultural zoning because of its present widespread adoption, and the probability that in the future it will be adopted by many more jurisdictions. The major findings of the case studies are reported in the GUIDEBOOK, but each individual study is being made available in its entirety in this volume so that other analysts can examine them in detail.
