New Cereal Varieties: Wheat and Corn in Mexico (Revised)

Dana G. Dalrymple

No 335257, USDA Miscellaneous from United States Department of Agriculture

Abstract: Excerpts from the report Preface: As part of the Spring Review of new grain varieties conducted by the Agency for International Development in 1969, I was asked to summarize recent developments in wheat and corn in Mexico. It was recognized that the story of new varieties of grains in Mexico through the early 1960's is well told by Stakman, Bradfield and Mangelsdorf in Campaigns Against Hunger (Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1967). I also knew that recent technological advances are reviewed in periodic reports of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (Centro Internacional de Majoramiento de Maiz y Trigo -- CIMMYT). Rather than repeating this material, it was decided to focus on economic and social issues -- particularly those of the 1960's. The report follows, but does not correspond precisely with, a general outline suggested by AID for country crop papers.
