Abstract:
This first Bicentennial Issue of Associates NAL, Today is devoted to a phase of agriculture which interests not only beekeepers but farmers, economists, hobbyists, scientists and the general reading public. The indispensable honey bee is of such widespread value and appeal that thousands of books, essays and research papers have been published extolling its virtue and worth. Since there is so much information to choose from and so many knowledgeable persons to call on, we have, of necessity, limited the material contained here. We have confined ourselves to apicultural matters in the National Capital Area, with special emphasis on Maryland beekeeping, the University of Maryland and Federal research programs. Papers included: Beginnings - Editorial Reflections (Angelina J. Carabelli) --- A Special Bee Library and a Special Bibliography (Julia S. Merrill) --- Bee Culture in Maryland (Dewey M. Caron) --- Beekeeping Courses at Land-Grant Universities (Alfred D. Straughan) --- Ethylene Oxide Fumigation for the Bee Industry (H. Shimanuki) --- Bee Pollination (E. C. Martin) --- Hybridization of Honey Bees in South America (Marshall D. Levin) --- Heritage of Apicultural Literature: A Bibliography of Pre-1870 Monographic Imprints (Alan J. Fusonie and Donna Jean Mason Fusonie).
