Rural Community Buildings in the United States

Abstract: Throughout the country there is a keen and widespread interest in community buildings, their activities, their accomplished results, and their possibilities. The construction and acquisition of special buildings to serve as community centers is such an important result of social organizations in the rural sections and smaller towns of the United States that a comprehensive study of a number of representative buildings was deemed desirable by the Department of Agriculture. Accordingly a study has been made of 256 such buildings. The buildings have been arranged in five classes based on the methods of financing, as those financed by local manufacturing concerns, through individual donations, through club or society initiative, by the local government, or through community endeavor. The general character of these buildings, maintenance, operation and management, and uses to which they are put are noted, and several specific examples are described in detail.
