Abstract: Excerpted from page 196 of Volume XIII of the Experiment Station Record: This bulletin deals with the agricultural conditions and capabilities of the Hawaiian Islands, with special reference to the establishment of an agricultural experiment station. The author visited the islands as special agent of this Department, and the collected information here set forth pertains to subjects of direct agricultural interest. A suitable location for an experiment station was selected, and recommendations regarding its equipment and suggestions as to its lines of work are presented. The physical, geographical, and geological features of the islands, including the soils and the origin of the Hawaiian people, are discussed, and the climate and rainfall are briefly noted. The greater part of the bulletin is devoted to a consideration of the flora of the islands, the production of coffee and sugar, and the growing of fruits and vegetables. Many native and introduced plants are briefly described, and some of the fruit trees and the palms growing on the islands, together with plants bearing seeds in the neighborhood of Honolulu, are enumerated. Stock raising, irrigation, forestry, labor, and land matters, including the history of land titles and land ownership, are each given separate consideration.
