Abstract: This report provides an overview of Alberta’s top exports from 2002 to 2005 and the tariff barriers that these products face when entering other countries. This information is intended to assist in the identification of product categories for which exports are hampered by restrictive tariffs. Thus, this report will assist in prioritizing Alberta’s tariff reduction or elimination objectives in multilateral trade negotiations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) or in bilateral agreements between Canada and its trading partners. The report focuses on exports to countries that do not have a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Canada (non-FTA countries). As Canada has an FTA with the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, and Israel, export data to these countries is not provided in this report. Export data is presented in accordance with the Harmonized Tariff Coding System (HS system) as maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and is focused solely on agricultural products, i.e., HS chapter 1-24 and 41. Data is presented at the 6-digit HS level of detail for Alberta exports of CAD$0.5 million or more in 2002, 2003, 2004, or 2005 to any non-FTA market.
