Abstract: The paper presents a snapshot of the socio-economic development of the Sakhalin Oblast, a region of the Russian Federation. General information on the territory (the number and density of the population, the pattern of settlements, the presence of undeveloped and border areas) is presented. The problems of the infrastructure availability of the region are identified. The region's current stage of economic development is analyzed, including the performance of the key economy sectors, foreign economic activity, employment, labor productivity and wages, investments, and preferential regimes. The state and features of the use of the resource potential are demonstrated. The level of social development and the quality of life in the Sakhalin Oblast are presented. The state and potential of regional budgets are revealed. Based on the comprehensive analysis of a wide array of relevant factual data, the key competitive advantages, limitations and development potentials of the Sakhalin Oblast are revealed. The paper is intended for specialists in the regional economics, regional and local government officials, faculty members, graduates and postgraduates as well as other readers interested in the development of the Russian Far East and the Sakhalin Oblast, in particular.
