Mode choice modelling. A literature review on the role of quality of service attributes and their monetary valuation in freight demand models

Abstract: This research paper was written in the framework of an OSTC1 project entitled “Assessment of quality differences between freight transport modes”. It was financed by the 'Sustainable production and consumption patterns SPSD 2' program, initiated by the Belgian State (contract CP/04/362). Therefore the Quality of Service (Q-o-S) aspects will be granted much attention in the present study. The review will start from an introduction to the frequently used demand models in freight transport. It is our intention to elaborate and further develop the idea of admitting Quality of Service attributes in these models. After presenting currently used demand models, the identification of the determining attributes in the mode choice and the methods to compute their monetary valuation are the main subjects of the study.
