The Urban Development and its housing pattern during the process of modernization - the case study of a Chinese place in Taiwan

Abstract: In the fifty years of Japanese colonial governing, the colonial, assimilation and capitalization policies of Taiwan GovernorÌs Office laid a solid foundation for the modernization of Taiwan. The formation of Hsi-Lo place under imperial colonialism can be divided into three phases: phase of the construction of colonial system 1895 1902 , phase of the capitalization of agriculture society 1902 1936 , and phase of urban development 1936 1945 . This article applies the historical interpretation method of Humanistic Geography approach to interpret the formation of the Hsi-Lo place during the Japanese occupation by fieldworks and historical texts. And we can find that the spatial pattern and the colonial spatiality in Hsi-Lo. The interpretation of the Hsi-LoÌs placeness in this article just shows the formation of the rural town in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial era.
