THE EVOLVING EUROPEAN REAL ESTATE RESEARCH AGENDA - A SEVENTEEN YEAR RETROSPECTIVE

Abstract: This paper provides a seventeen year retrospective on the contributions made to the evolving European real estate research agenda at the annual conferences of the European Real Estate Society (ERES) over the period 1993-2009. Using a recently constructed database of conference records it identifies a total of over two thousand eight hundred individual conference contributions made over the period. The mix of topics has shifted over time from a focus on research related to valuation and specific developments in individual markets to an increasing focus on finance and investment research and cross-border comparisons. Throughout the period housing research has remained a very important topic of contribution. The paper also examines how the evolving real research agenda reflects the process of structural change which has taken place in the European real estate over the same period. At a wider level this work provides a benchmark of how the European research agenda has evolved overtime and seeks to stimulate debate on its future evolution.
