Inaugural ASEAN Chief Justices’ Roundtable on Environment: The Proceedings

Abstract: From 5–7 December 2011, chief justices and senior members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) judiciaries, and representatives from various governmental agencies, nongovernment organizations and civil society groups convened in an inaugural roundtable, in Jakarta, Indonesia, to discuss common environmental and legal challenges and the judiciary’s role in championing environmental justice, developing environmental jurisprudence, and leading the rest of the legal profession towards credible rule of law systems. By the close of the roundtable, the participants were able to formulate A Common Vision on Environment for ASEAN Judiciaries statement, in which the senior judges committed to go back to their national judiciaries and help strengthen the environmental enforcement chain.
