Abstract: Gainful employment of women, especially of married women as well as of mothers has increasedin Germany to a remarkable extent during the last decades. At the same time the number of births hasstrongly diminished. The author analyses the reasons underlying this development and theconsequences and problems of the changed role of women within family, economy andsociety. Having described the instruments used to make the fulfilment of family dutiescompatible with employment he answers the question how this catalogue of instrumentsshould be completed and improved.
