Abstract:
This paper is a contribution to a series of seminars in honour of the late Ronald Henderson. The author was asked to address the question of how the national interest, possible loss of national sovereignty can be addressed within the market framework and whether there are reasons for concern about a reduced quality of life with contemporary economic growth.
