Abstract:
This work presents the results of a case study about a private institution for certification of suppliers, the PRODFOR. A set of hypotheses arose from fieldwork, and it was further tested empirically with data gathered from a survey. Through signaling with standardization and reduction of risks associated with the buying activities, the private collective arrangement impregnated with enforcement and coercion rules was supposed to promote a reduction of transaction costs incurred by the buyers in the transactions with local dealers. The perception of ex ante and ex post transaction costs of buying before and after the certification process were compared. The results support the conclusion that the reduction of risk associated with certification has resulted effectively in reducing the transaction costs of buyers.
