Abstract: Family ownership of firms continues to attract considerable interest in both academic research and the policy debate. This paper provides an analysis of this phenomenon in Italy over the past ten years. During this period, family ownership has become more prevalent, partly reflecting changes in the composition of the business sector and selection mechanisms. Family firms are, on average, smaller and less productive; however, they are more resilient and have higher operating margins, reflecting more prudent business strategies and a stronger focus on cost containment. When elderly shareholders are present, transfers of control represent a critical juncture. The main obstacles concern difficulties in transferring skills and business relationships, bureaucratic requirements, and the lack of suitable successors; these difficulties are more pronounced for smaller and more financially fragile firms. Among firms that undergo a transfer of control, performance tends to improve, particularly when the transfer is accompanied by the entry of outside shareholders, suggesting benefits from industrial integration and organizational strengthening.
