Abstract: The share of the manufacturing industry in French GDP has fallen by 9 percentage points over the past forty years. This decline is mainly due to technical progress and consumer preferences. Foreign trade has only played a minor role.

La part de l’industrie manufacturière dans le PIB français a baissé de 9 points en quarante ans. Cette évolution s’explique surtout par le progrès technique et les préférences des consommateurs. Le commerce extérieur n’a joué qu’un rôle secondaire.
