Abstract:
The insurance market in Uruguay is smaller than the average for Latin American countries. However, it is expected to growth in the following years as a consequence of the transfers from pension funds to insurance companies, which may serve pensions to retired workers. Some characteristics of the insurance market (e.g. high concentration), the current regulation (e.g. regulation to key actuarial parameters), and the local financial markets (e.g. its low degree of development), may impose limitations to the development of a competitive insurance market. This paper analyzes the perspective and the challenges of the insurance market in Uruguay, and discusses some policy implications.
