Abstract: Causal mediation analysis allows for the decomposition into direct and indirect causal effects. This form of decomposition provides a fine-grained look at the pathways through which causal effects operate. In this presentation, we will review the basic principles of causal mediation in the context of the potential-outcomes framework. In addition, we will discuss some of the intricacies that we face when having more than one mediator variable, and we will discuss a number of examples with two mediators to illustrate the corresponding challenges.
