Abstract: I review measures of association for two-way mobility tables that are computed directly from observed frequencies, without fitting expected frequencies, and I propose the intensity–pattern decomposition (IPD). The IPD defines a common pattern of association across K tables and splits the association of each table into two orthogonal and additive components: an intensity, which is the descriptive counterpart of the UNIDIFF layer effect, and a residual that measures and locates departures from uniform change. Like the Altham index and the intrinsic association coefficient, the IPD uses the full set of odds ratios and requires no ordering of categories. I present the mobindex command, which computes these measures with bootstrap standard errors. Keywords: st0000, mobindex, social mobility, odds ratios, Altham index, intrinsic association coefficient, uniform difference, intensity–pattern decomposition.
