Terror and birth weights

Abstract: Tension and anxiety during pregnancy have been connected to low birth weight, which in turn has a negative impact on a range of lifetime outcomes. The current research examines the effect of Palestinian terror over time and between geographical areas and on panel data for the change in birth weight between consecutive newborns of the same mother. Terror during any of the trimesters was not found to have any effect on birth weight. The result holds even for fatal terror attacks that took place in the woman's city of residence and in Judea, Samaria and Gaza and Jerusalem, where terror attacks were far more frequent, the small number of previous studies generally found a negative effect for terror on birth weight. It is hypothesized that the lack of effect in Israel is related to the population's acclimatization to terror over a long period. In addition, the number of days of reserve duty served by the spouse during the pregnancy did not have any effect on birth weight, a phenomenon that has not been investigated previously.
