Abstract: In Las Palmas Port, the introduction of technology in the cargo handling process and the restructuring of transportation systems led to a considerable reduction in the port workforce. The technological innovations also had an important impact on the organization of work and labour relations. The large-scale introduction of containers from the 1960´s onwards required new methods for organising port operations, leading to massive reductions in work team employment and changes in contractual relationships, factors which form the basis of the high performance achieved in recent years.
