No 01/EL/13, Economic Letters from Central Bank of Ireland

Abstract: The financial crisis has seen Irish banks' profitability undermined and net interest margins fall to historic lows of 1 per cent and less, extending a pre-crisis trend of falling margins. Low margins raise concerns as to the ability of banks to generate recurring, long-term revenues. This Economic Letter traces the evolution of Irish banks' net interest margins from 1999 through to 2012 and identifies the key challenges facing banks in order to rebuild margins.
