Approaches to Changing Military Health Care

Congressional Budget Office

No 53137, Reports from Congressional Budget Office

Abstract: The Department of Defense (DoD) spends about $50 billion annually to provide health care to more than 9 million beneficiaries through a program known as TRICARE. CBO examined several illustrative approaches that might reduce DoD’s rising health care costs, improve the quality of care provided at its facilities, or strengthen how well the department’s medical establishment prepares for wartime missions. The report also describes the estimated budgetary effects of two specific options for making changes to TRICARE.
