Distribution of Federal Support for Students Pursuing Higher Education in 2016
Congressional Budget Office
No 53732, Reports from Congressional Budget Office
Abstract:
CBO estimates the federal government provided students pursuing higher education in 2016 with about $91 billion in direct financial support through a wide variety of spending programs (including subsidies for student loans) and income and payroll tax expenditures. Altogether, that assistance covered almost one-third of the cost of attendance for students from households in the lowest-income quintile but less than 10 percent for students from households in the highest-income quintile.
