No 199909, Working Papers from CERDI

Abstract: The relationship between the real exchange rate and urban/rural per capita real income disparity is modeled and applied in the case of China. Contrary to the effect usually expected, the model predicts that the real depreciation of the Chinese currency during the 1978-94 period may have raised the urban bias. This rise in the urban bias may however be mitigated or even reversed for coastal provinces due to the strong development of more outward-oriented rural industrial activities since 1985.
