Abstract: This paper develops a test for the presence of alternate bearing and a means of consistently estimating yields for crops whose output varies from year to year for reasons not fully captured by available biological and economic variables. Using these techniques one can better forecast yields than one can using previous methods. This approach is illustrated for the California Bartlett pear and avocado industries.
