Abstract: This paper aims to offer demographic inputs to improve criteria of economic regionalization based on the polarization approach, which takes into account the urban network and its hierarchy. From a methodological perspective of an integrated analysis of economic and demographic factors of polarization, we incorporate in the regionalization method the population movements among geographical localities at the micro-spatial level. The final step is the development of an economic regionalization that integrates economic and demographic variables of flow and stock. Our methodological framework provides an understanding of the Brazilian urban poles regarding their influence areas and changes in their boundaries along the 70s, 80s and 90s, due to migration flows of the periods 1975/1980, 1986/1991 and 1995/2000. We use three alternative models. The first is based on migratory movements between the poles and other geographical areas, at micro, meso and macro spatial levels. The second replaces total migration flows by migration flows of the occupied labor force (OLF). And the third one measures migration flows of OLF by total incomes of OLF instead of the number of migrants.
