Abstract: There is evidence that behavioral and lifestyle changes, encouraged by the Protestant churches in Brazil (especially Pentecostals and Neo-Pentecostals), are positively associated with variables such as health and income, which are, in their turn, considered into the Human Development Index (HDI) In this sense, the present study, is a preliminary and exploratory exercise in ecological level, on the relationship between the proportion of Protestants and the HDI for each state (UF) in Brazil. Through a regression model, we observed positive relationship between HDI and the proportion of Protestants. However, in the case of ecological relationships at the state level, it is premature to say that also occur in the cities, in neighborhoods and communities. More importantly, it is not possible to extrapolate this relationship to individuals. In view of these findings, one of the directions that we intend to advance this research is the incorporation of other scales of data analysis.
