Abstract:
The analysis of the set of age specific growth rates in a population, proposed by Horiuch and Preston (1988), is an alternative way to examine the process of changing age structure, and to examine potential "marks" left by the demographic history of each cohort. The objective of this study is to apply this methodology to the Brazilian population, discussing some of the main features of the demographic history in Brazil. Based on simulated patterns of age specific growth rates discussed by Horiuch and Preston (1988) we look at pertinent features of the Brazilian population´s demographic history that may be present in the current cohorts. The results presented here show that the information contained in current age specific growth rates are quite instructive about the effects of variations in demographic regimes and are very useful in populations where vital rates are not reliable or unavailable.
