Abstract: The article covers the general situation of construction works carried out in the traditional roadway infrastructure by the Provincial Government of Minas Gerais, between 1840 and 1889. The principal sources are Highway and Bridge Construction Processes, generated within the scope of the Public Works Office, and which cover an extensive and complex documentation about all the phases of road interventions conducted in the province. The fundamental results show a strong correlation between the level of economic development of the regions in Minas and the occurrence of public road works, revealing a pronounced imbalance in the distribution of financial resources in the province allocated for transportation infrastructure in Minas Gerais.
