Abstract:
This paper discusses the nature of international interest in the development of the Brazilian Northeast, in the midst of a Cold War scenario and shortly after the Cuban Revolution. It indicates that Sudene’s creation in 1959 was possible mainly due to the national context of anti-communist panic, a kind of Brazilian Red Scare, established nationally because the rural working class in the Brazilian Northeast began to organize themselves in the Peasant Leagues movement. Thus, it analyzes the impact of the American Cold War propaganda and explains how Celso Furtado used anti-communist discourse to project Sudene as the salvation of the Northeast.
