Abstract: Throughout history societies have given much importance to the concept of progress. With the development of national accounts, due to its creator Simon Kuznets, Gross Domestic Product has been the indicator used to measure the level of activity, the overall development of society, progress and welfare. But Kuznets had already warned that such an indicator was not appropriate to measure the well-being of a society. Only in recent times efforts have been made to propose best indicators for such purposes. They are analyzed in this paper.
