Inégalités de richesse Québec-Ontario: une comparaison par cohortes

Abstract: The objective of this report is to study wealth inequality and cohort differences in wealth in Québec and Ontario for the period 1999-2019. Based on data from Statistics Canada's Survey of Financial Security, it compares household wealth and its distribution across the two provinces, highlights the role of various demographic groups and asset types, and analyzes the evolution of wealth accumulation by age over time. The main findings show that household wealth in Québec was lower than in Ontario as early as 1999, a disparity that has since widened. This gap does not appear to be attributable to differences in household growth, data sources, income growth, educational dynamics, or income shares held by the wealthiest. Instead, the analyses suggest that the primary factor lies in divergent trends in real estate wealth. L’objectif de ce rapport est d’étudier les inégalités de richesse et leurs différences par cohortes au Québec et en Ontario entre 1999 et 2019. Basé sur l’Enquête sur la sécurité financière de Statistique Canada, il compare la richesse des ménages et sa distribution entre les deux provinces, met en relief le rôle de différents groupes démographiques et de différents actifs et analyse l’évolution de l’accumulation de richesse avec l’âge au fil du temps. Les principaux résultats montrent que la richesse des ménages québécois était inférieure à celle de l’Ontario dès 1999, une disparité qui s’est accrue depuis. Cet écart n’apparaît pas attribuable à des différences dans l’augmentation du nombre de ménages, aux données utilisées, à des différences dans la croissance du revenu des ménages, ni à des dynamiques liées à l’éducation ou aux parts de revenu détenues par les plus riches. Les analyses indiquent que le facteur primordial serait plutôt une évolution différenciée du patrimoine immobilier.
