Abstract: This paper seeks for a helpful explanation of the economic development process of the northeast region of Uruguay taking as a starting point the economic structure on the territory and the urban and rural spatial interactions. For this, in this work it is proposed an analytical model that considers three fundamental aspects: the innovative and competitive dynamics of the region, the local economic relations and the local and urban interdependencies. This work was developed based on 80 interviews to local and regional agents -enterprises, government and social or non-government organizations. The results of this study shows that this region arranges and interrelated urban and rural space where both realms support each other. However, the regional economy as a whole suffers a fragmented and unequal development -a vast majority of the economic sectors are noncompetitive and the competitive ones have not established strong links with the region and its economy.
