Abstract:
The theoretical framework of this study is the production internationalization of firms. It investigates the case of Italian firms “migration” in Romania – a “massive” and atypical phenomenon of manufacturing delocalization of Italian firms. Despite the large amount of Italian literature already published around this topic, a limited number of quantitative studies are available. Therefore, this study presents a new approach of inquiry and a new empirical analysis of this topic. A business register-based survey was carried out to select Italian companies continuously active in manufacturing production until December 2009. A multilevel model is used to verify if the intra-industry characteristics (i.e. firm size, firm industrial specialization) and the geographical regions in which these firms are localized explain their performance in 2009. The consistent effects which are found within the analysis - both at individual and area level - allow to gather some considerations about system-based policies for local development.
