Abstract: This document analyses the economic policies implemented in the first year by the federal government under Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador's leadership. Four main social policies are identified, which increase the population consumption and promote the development of human capital: an increase of the minimum wage; scholarships for students in elementary, secondary and higher education; a job training program for young people and a universal pension for older people. Besides, to revitalize the lagging states in the south of the country, they decided to reinstate the national oil production and refining system, modernize various ports and airports and build the Mayan and the Transisthmian Train. However, a broader agenda to combat inequality through progressive fiscal reform is needed, as well as the implementation of a science and technology policy that will serve as a platform for industrial development in high value-added products. The challenge for industrial policy is to effectively articulate value chains throughout the territory to increase competitiveness and meet growing demand in the domestic and foreign markets.
